I like my portraits to capture the subject's personality as fully as a photograph allows. I love taking candid shots the most, but I've been trying to work on studio-style posed portraits for the kiddos. The only difficulty I ran into was trying to decide which pictures to put up here, so that I have a pretty good mix of subjects and an about even posed-to-candid ratio. Hope everyone else had as much fun this week as I did!

WOW! You really enjoy portraits! I love the hugs photo. I really like how you captured the emotions of the children as well as the boo-boo cuddles. Even thought the gentleman is holding the sad child, the child is the highlight and it is a dramatic photo. Great shots!
ReplyDeleteThese are all amazing!! Each shot of yours is so unique it tells it's own story. You did an incredible job capturing your subjects in a way where it doesn't look like they are just posing for the camera, which makes them so much more effective.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite photo is "Chuzzy is 4". I love the angles and the lines in this picture. Also the expression on his face is just adorable.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I guess you needed the disclaimer at the beginning. This amount of work is absolutely amazing. Take a look at the photos where you are above your subjects and the ones where you are at eye level with your subject and compare them. I think you'll find that the ones where you are at I level or below were more successful. A portrait is an attempt to tell the story of the subject in a very short, abbreviated way. I think you were mostly successful with these.… There is always room for improvement… No matter how good you are. When making portraits, try and elevate your subject to a place of high regard. This is done, mechanically, by placing the camera at the subject's eye level or below. This is done personally or psychologically by making your subject comfortable, which means that you must be comfortable. All of your subjects in these photos appear to be very comfortable and happy, minus the one who wants to tell you his seedpods, and this tells me that you are able to get your subject to feel this way with a camera in your hands. Keep practicing. Also, take more time to set up your shots… Really be deliberate about setting, light, and composition. Not so much that it makes you uptight, but enough so that you can elevate your subject. Great work!
